The Pike and San Isabel National Forests and the Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands are in the process of a Hayman Roads Analysis Project.

This process will make recommendations for a transportation management strategy, and is NOT a decision document.

The objective of this analysis is to provide line officers
with information needed to identify and manage a road
system that is safe and responsive to public and
agency needs, environmentally sound, and affordable
and efficient to manage.

System and non-system forest roads within the
watersheds that provide access to the Hayman
Burned Area will be analyzed. A road is a vehicle
travel-way more than 50 inches wide. System roads
are roads constructed or maintained for long-term
motor vehicle access (including high clearance 4X4
vehicles). Non-system roads are not managed as part
of the forest transportation system, such as unplanned
roads, abandoned travelways, and travel-ways
resulting from off-road vehicle use.

Tasks include: identification of roads that should be maintained for long-term motor vehicle access; an interdisciplinary evaluation of local and spur roads, some of which could then be considered for closure or decommissioning; and prioritization of future road projects.

A map of the roads being considered in this analysis is enclosed. A full size map is available for viewing at the Hayman Restoration Office. If you have any concerns or information about any of these roads, please let us know by May 14, 2003. Any comments you wish to include about why a road is important to you would also be useful in our analysis. For instance, are there roads on this map that meet or would meet your needs if they were maintained to a lesser standard, such as suitable for high clearance vehicles only? Which of these roads do you believe should be maintained as suitable for passenger cars? Are there roads on this map that you think should be closed or decommissioned? Or, if you would like more information or want to be kept informed about the process, please contact:
