I need help!!! I have an '84 Cherokee Chief, and there was a 231, 2.8 V6 in it, but it blew, and now I am looking for an engine that has some oomph to it, and am wondering what I can drop in it without alot of modifications-I was looking into a 231 3.8-would it work, and what mods would I have to make? thanks for the input-I will greatly appreciate it.

Well, I have heard that it is quite easy to drop in a Chevy 350, that is what I would do if you have the money. That would give you more than enough HP and torque, and oomph to boot! I'm sure some people on the forum have some knowledge about it, but that is just something I have heard. HTH! :)

I thought about that too but my concern was for the chassis. Can the Uni-Body hold up to that much engine? Again I do not know and was just curious. TY XXJ

okay, a 350...anyone else have any ideas? I am really leaning towards the 231 3.8, but I can be easily swayed if I find something simpler to drop in without modifying everything...any more thoughts/encouraging words?

It seems like no matter what engine you put in there, if it's different you will have to modify. Some are just easier than others. I have a 97 Chevy 350 in my 89' YJ.
There is a conversion kit for everything now.

well-i found a good engine for the chief-a 3.4l-darn thing is brand new-and the price shows it-but it will be worth it when I finally get everything done to the jeep...thanks for the input.

I'd put a 4.0L in it if I were you. Might be difficult with all the wiring though.

Okay,
This is what I am doing. Your GM Performance Dealer has this upgrade for a BOLT-IN replacement for your weary 2.8. It is fairly cheap too. Probably a lot less than a rebuild and w/ a lot less concerns. I think about $1700.00
It is a HT 3.4 ltr V-6. It is actually a Camaro motor from what I have been told. There are certainly other possiblities out there, but this one is a no-brianer for me check it out:

Or you can pick up a remanufactored AMC 2.8:

Good luck on your swap, I am going for the 3.4. I will post a definite price later. I will be going by the Dealer next week or so.
