I'm the current owner of a 93 Cherokee, and have the op to get a 84 CJ no aparent rust, both hard & soft tops/doors. looks to be 31's.

Body wise can you show/tell me the difference between the cj 6-7-8.. I'm gonna be looking at this thing closer this weekend and if the body's straight and motors sounds ok I might grab it for the $1800.00.. But wanna make sure it isn't gonna be a raping of me in the end. (Sorry for the pun)

Warnings, Trouble spots?

Thanx

The CJ6 is more rare than the others. The CJ8 is also known as the scrambler and is longer than the other two. THere are of course other differnces based on the years that they were made (ie. engine, tranny etc.)

They were still closed but it's not 1800.00, (that what you get for tring to see the price as you drive by at 40.

They were closed so i dont have full specs yet but:
1984 CJ7
31x10.5 - Firestone exploders
No body lift, looks like it has a small shackle lift, Very minor rust spots (2) on the tub about the size of quarters.
?85k ok the clock with 5 on the floor. Since it has a 5 I'm guessing it has the 258 I6
Missing tire carrier.
$4,795 eeek it is a buyherepayhere, and i seen this thing sitting there since last october. Hence not many jeepers here.

I'm going back later today and see how much it is worth for him to sell it. :) But i'm not to optimistic.

If its $4795 then I'm not too surprized it has been sitting around that long. Is this a dealer or a private sale?
If its original it will have the 258 I6 which is a good motor except for that **** Carter carb they stick on it. Also the 5speed T5 gearbox is not known to be that strong. I have one in my CJ7 that has lost 5th gear.
Check it out a little more closely for rust, especially around the floor areas in the front driver and passenger side.
Others will have other input I'm sure.

Measuring from the door hinge to the rear of the jeep the CJ5 measures 71 1/2" and the CJ7 is 81" also the shape of the door opening give you a clue.
The door opening on a 5 has a hump in it, it looks like the letter S that fell over (checkout My Jeep its a 5) and the door opening in the 7 looks like a U no humps.
The CJ6 looks like a long CJ7 I not sure what it measures but its alot more then 81"
The CJ8 or Scrambler looks like a little jeep pickup.

Hope This Helps !

P.S. Check the rear of the frame where the springs are attached jeeps like to rust out there !

price is high, most all cj are going to have some rust on them.i bought my cj-5 258 six,3 speed recently rebuilt engine some rusted floor boards that i have since patched,32 inch tires mechanically sound(no oil leaks or smoke)for 12 hundred buck.this was a killer deal but i wouldnt have paid more than say 2500 for it.
carter carbs not be the best but i can and have rebuilt it for 18 dollers and it is very dependible.
4200 is high considering that no matter how good a shape its in your going to sink money into it,lots of money!!!!!!

the hard top is worth quite a bit by itself.4750 is still high id offer him 3000 and go as high as 3500.that may be a good deal if the jeep is sound.

85 thousand would be low miles but you cant be sure if thats acurate.drive it see if the speedo still works(if not its just a 11 doller cable replacement).also look in the engine(remove oil filler cap on top of engine)you will be able to see the front lifters, they will be covered with oil but look to see if there all gunked up or relitivaly clean with just a slight oil covering, pull dip stick before after you drive it.sometimes oil will look good(especialy if he just changed oil)but after you drive it look for any thing that dosent look like oil(foam, white gunk, air and water bubbles, see how much the enjine smokes after you start it and when you return rev it up,shouldnt smoke after its warmed up,and of course look for fresh oil around engine, gearboxes, differentals.
run your finger over front disks to see if the scoured(ruff)

I said ?85 since the odo doesn't show the 100k points.

When I went back yesterday the hood was open, the the motor has rust, the noid's connectors are rusted.

The carb appeared brand new, and carried delco badges

Under it you can see some holes in the front floors (covered on inside with galv steel).

Found about $3.00 worth of bondo.

I tire is leaking.

The hardtop has the open up rear window (keyed)

ohh, The rubber body mounts are shot.

RUN AWAY !! RUN AWAY !!!

For $5000.... Go to AZ and find a rust free CJ. That's what I did. So much nicer to not have to fight that rust demon !

Seriously, for that kind of money, you can find a decent CJ with a little research and time... Might already have some basic mods too !

Good luck !

Join the CJ club ! WELCOME!

yes if its one of those buy here pay here places, the guy bought the thing for less than a grand.probably more like 800.
if he want 48oo for it and hes financing it,he,ll take 1800 bucks cash.
but like someone else said if you got 5000 to spend you can get a real nice cj
