The following is a message I recieved from William A. Kaeppner (email: info@ohiotrails.org) of the OMTA (http://www.ohiotrails.org), followed by the email from Wayne NF. Please read, this is very important to Ohio Off Roading in general, please try to attend if possible at any of the of the meetings.
Last year we started step one with the Wayne National forest revision. _We traveled the state presenting our view point at the “market place of ideas”. We did a good job, Ohio Multi-use Trails Association was the only group to have representation at all of the meetings.
We are now about to start round two the “workshops for the plan revision”. You thought that if you told them what you wanted that would be enough, well it was not and is not. These workshops are where the groups who did not make the meetings will try to take your riding and riding areas away.
There are three workshops and as the notice below says “Each of the three workshops will be identical in format,” They are on Saturdays and will be five hours long. The workshops will provide “an opportunity to develop alternative ways to manage the forest,” The current plan tells the Wayne they owe you two hundred more miles of trail since 1993, we need to up that number, anti access folks will have an alternative too, can you guess where you fall in their plan?
The meetings we attended last year showed them that we are organized, concerned and provided them with ways to fulfill their promise to us. We must attend the next three meetings to make sure at least one if not all the alternatives, as a minimum, insures they keep their promise from 1982.
The Wayne will “break up” the attendees into groups and each group will come up with Alternatives. If we have enough folks at each meeting to have folks in each group we can make sure the alternatives reflect our point of view, if we are not well represented the alternatives will exclude us. As an example if we have enough 4x4 drivers there could be an inclusion for the Wayne to mark their legal dirt roads and publish them as opposed to hiding them as they do now, maybe even mark the well roads they currently gate. We need everyone who rides or wheels to sacrifice five hours and make the meeting closest to them. _
Please mark your calendars and plan to make the meeting closest to you. Drop me a note so I know who will be where. If “I” made every meeting I would only count as one person once and I would only sit in one breakout group. We need to have enough folks show up to have a few people in each group.
I will be attending the Athens meeting and hope to have at least fifteen folks with me. We all need to pick a meeting and ask our friends to go along. Five hours seems like a long time but the forest plan we affect will be in place for at least fifteen years.
Please get this message posted everywhere you can, we need to own these meetings.

“Each of the three workshops will be identical in format,” notes Gianniny. “We’re having meetings around the state in an effort to make attendance easier for those who want to participate.” Participants attending the workshops will be working with other members of the public to develop different general management approaches. Those attending should plan on being present for the entire workshop. Instructions and background material will be presented in the morning that will be needed for work later in the day.
The Wayne’s Forest Plan is a strategic document that outlines broad goals and priorities for how your national forest is managed. During the revision process, a range of alternatives is developed and an evaluation is made of the physical, biological, economic, and social effects for each alternative.
Those unable to participate in the workshops who would like to provide input on alternatives should contact the Wayne National Forest office in Nelsonville.
Gianniny anticipates having a Draft Environmental Impact Statement and Proposed Revised Forest Plan available for public comment in fall of 2004. The Final Environmental Impact Statement and Revised Forest Plan is planned for publication in the fall of 2005.
Please email Bill if you are able to attend, and post here: Ohio 4x4 trailriders Forum (http://www.ohio4x4.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=285) if you would like to carpool to any of the workshops from the Columbus Area. Thanks, Bryan
