I posted this on JU so if you go there, too, this is the same note.

I could use some help with the '79 CJ-5. I can't get the wheel bearings off the front axles. It has the 6-bolt hubs w/2 bolt caliper plate. I've removed the hubs and I can see the wheel bearings. But there's some sort of cap or ring with 5 tiny little set screws in front of the axle nut. I can't get in to turn the nut until I get this cap off. I've removed the set screws that were still there (some are stripped out) but the cap is not loose. I can't pry it out and it won't turn.
The "exploded" mechanical diagrams I've found do not even show this piece. Is it pressed on? If so, can anyone tell me what kind of puller I'll need to get them off? There isn't much room to get the hooks of a "universal" gear puller behind this cap. It looks like it should just pop right off, but it is definitely not doing so.

Any ideas? I really need to get new brake rotors installed, but I can't get the old ones off until I get past this point.
