View Full Version : Never had the doors off- Is this really safe?
This will be my second topless season. Last year I didn't take the doors off because I'm concerned about safety issues. If it was just myself I wouldn't worry about it.
The doors aren't thick but they would at least stop any flying glass or small objects right? Have any of you guys been in an accident with the top down and doors off? I really want to go doorless this season but I'm undecided at this point. Maybe I'll just put the doors back on when I have a passenger(no rear seat). Or maybe I'll go with just one door.:D
BTW, I have full doors.

If your really concerned get some half doors.
The way I see it:
Is it as safe as full doors: NO
Is it worth the risk: Absolutely!

take em off!!:D :D or if your still worried, do what cooch said and get some half doors.
If you enjoy going topless, you'll enjoy being doorless too. Is it safe? That's a matter of where you go. I wouldn't drive 75 down a gravel road with the top or the doors off. Off roading in mud? Maybe a little risk of getting something in your face. But Jeeps are designed to be driven with the doors off and it's definitely something that will grow on you in good weather.

I got side-swiped in my car a few years back. The only injury was that the girl on the side the truck hit was injured by flying glass because the window shattered.
Just something to think about.
The biggest danger of no doors is your leg falling out and getting under the Jeep in a roll-over. I like the idea of "Safari" tube doors.

Is it safe to take the doors off? No
Is driving safe? No
Are most things if life "safe"? No
But this one is definitely worth the risk. :)

Is any activity really safe? Sex can get you into all kind of troubles too. But we all do it, correct? :)
Personally, once you take the doors off, you'll wish it would stay warm all year round where you live. I know I do.
It is a different sensation. Even different that going with half doors. Doorless and topless is the essence of Jeeping. Well partly. Doorless, topless and out on the trail is the essence of Jeeping. :)

Had mine off today! Couldn't resist, the temp has soared up to almost 40. I have to admit it is kind of a drag when you get "slushed" by oncoming vehicles though. Well worth it though. Spring will be here soon, haven't had any snow since last night. Now if we could just get rid of the couple feet sitting on the ground.

I love the feeling of having the doors off, the top off and going down the highway at 75 mph. You get alot of looks of "Oh my God", "what's he crazy?!" It's great to look down and see the road right underneath you. Kinda like riding a motorcycle. Wouldn't trade that feeling for the world. I highly recommend everyone do it, at least once.

What do you guys do for side mirrors? If I go to take my doors off I will be left mirrorless(except for rear).
Is this legal in most places(namely Ontario)?
How much do those mirror relocating things run, and do they work well?
EP - Once I got the doors off last year I never wanted to put them on again. It is similar to the excitement felt on a motorcyle.
It was 57 degrees on Thursday so I put the drivers side mirror relocator in anticipation of the doorless/topless season.
Today it is 20 and snowing. Dang
Patrick - most areas have a drivers side mirror requirment. I have, however, heard of many people driving with no side mirrors and never being bothered by the law.
BTW - I bought Steelhorse mirror relocator brackets (newbie mistake). I can't see a thing out of the passenger side mirror when the door is on and both doors hit the mirrors when they open. Lesson here is don't buy the Steelhorse mirror relocation brackets.

Depends on the state or province you're in. Down here in OK the statute only calls for one mirror that provides an unobstructed view 200' to the rear. So side mirrors aren't needed so long as I've still got the inside windshield mirror.
Personally though, I like a mirror on my left side, so I used a simple bicycle mirror that I found that slips into the empty hinge and tightens down with a nut. Cost me all of $3.

Patrick89YJ, you have a couple of options for the mirror relocation brackets. Sun Performance Products (http://www.sunperformance.com/) has some things you can look at. Quadratec (http://www.quadratec.com/cgi-bin/sgdynamo.exe?HTNAME=default.htm) also carries the Steel Crap which I bought first and learned my first lesson. I've since then painted over them 3 times to touch up spots but they do the job. One last option, that I know of, is California Tops (http://www.californiatops.com/indexframeiem.html). This is more expensive because they come with the mirrors and the relocation bracket. I personally don't mind the cheap Steelies becuase, well, they were real cheap and do the job. Not the highest quality, but they work. HTH

I will agree with the others and no doors are the way to go. Safety is a small concern but well worth it.
I also have the steel horse mirrors and they need to be painted before this season starts in ernest.

When spring comes around, my doors (as well as my top) come off. I ride with my Jeep like that from about Mar/April to Oct/Nov.
Try it, you'll love it!!

Take a look at my pics (click on the link in my signature), to see my mirrors.
I like the Quick Mirror II's that I got. I can use them with the doors off and the windshield down. Yes, I ride with the windshield down too.

You can take the doors off and as lng as you buckle up, you should be o.k. Going at speed most stuff will fly by the Jeep but the one time I got broadsided in another shicle, I was hit with my own flying glass and cut all over my arms and head. Now i have gone doorless and the only thing that makes me uncomfortable are the homeless near my house who aren't homeless and extremely agressive. The Club not only deteres theft but becomes a handy tool for negotiation. ;)
Anyone know if the mirrors are required in WA?

I have never had a problem with having my doors off on my TJ, but you could buy some half soft doors if you were concerned with the rocks, and dust chips.

****, Chris!! I know you are crazy, but it was only about 18 degrees out the other night!!
EP, I ran doorless last year and can't wait to do it again this year. My kids both love the fact that they can easily get in and out of the TJ without worrying about the doors hitting the vehicle parked next to me. (They sometimes have a bit of a problem controlling the door on a windy day.) I say go for it.
In my CJ, I often go doorless before I go topless. :D During the spring, it's cold in the morning, so doors and top are on. After work, I just remove the doors, toss them in the back, and enjoy an open-air drive home (even though the soft top is still on).
I'll put the top and doors away for the summer around the 3rd week in May.

As long as you're taking the top and doors off you might as well put the window down also!
