Go to this site and see if you see anything familiar:

If it's out of the the '76CJ5 it's probably a dana 20

I would have to say it's a Dana 20.
Take a look at the size of the oil pan on the bottom of the t-case. The dana 300 has a pan that is almost flush and the Dana 20 has a deep pan.
Here's some pictures:

I still say it is a d300. Only because of the fill plug, and that is what i looked at first. Also look at where the shift tubes are. I probably am wrong though. I wonder about the pan thing.

It's 50 deg here in Ravenna and I had to go check under my CJ.
Here goes.
My 76 CJ5 Has the fill plug in the same position as the Willysboy, on the back but away from the shift tube. It also has the deep oil pan
My 8? CJ7 ha a dana 300 and the fill plug is exactly the same as in the picture I posted (close to the shift tubes). It has a shallow oil pan as in the picture.
My 79 CJ5 has a dana 20 and the fill plug is on the back right next to the shift tube as in the dana 300 !!!! It also has the deep oil pan.
Looks like they needed more oil in the tcase after '76. I could see this in the 300 because of the shallow oil pan but the one in the '79 is a mystery.
The best look is to see how it mounts to the tranny. The dana 20 has flanges comming out to bolt to the tranny and the model 300 is in a perfect circle.
If it's bolted to a 3 speed t150 it has to be a dana 20.

I wonder if Willyboy2001 has ever come back to view this post. It's been kinda dead around here lately.

OK im back....Looks like the 300 and the 20 are VERY similar. I will have to go clean the thing off and take a better look. This picture is pretty grimey...I am however starting to think it's a 20...I was hoping it was a 300...I will post more pictures here tomorrow night after I get it cleaned up..Thanks for the input..
