I recently rebuilt a '74 model 30, complete including new R&P and Lockright, to be installed in my '71, replacing the model 27.
Last week, I got the knuckles into place and torqued, and the rest went quickly
after that. It was a little tricky trying to torque the nuts on the ball joint studs
with the assembly on jackstands. I eventually backed the CJ over the axle, used
a floor jack to raise the axle, put a socket over the upper stud and lifted it
against the CJ bumper. This put enough pressure on the studs to keep them
from turning while I torqued the lower one to spec. Then I torqued the set ring
on the upper, torqued the nut to spec, and pinned it.
Last night, I backed the CJ into the garage at 5:00. I removed the wheels,
shocks, stabilizer, drag link and driveshaft. My buddy came over around 6:00,
and we cut off the old ubolts (after trying to get the nuts over the ends that
had been torched ) . Carefully removed the brakelines (went well) and
unhooked the breather, then removed the shackles. By about 7:20, we dragged
the old 27 to the other side of the garage .
We positioned the 30 over the springs, and started the new ubolts into the
spring plates. After a little compression in the vice, got these started. Hung the
new ConFerr shackles, and jacked up the 30. Got one spring hung, had a little
trouble with the other one. My wife came out and guided the bolt through while
John and I made adjustments. Tightened up the ubolts. That's about it. The CJ
is on jackstands in the garage with the 30 hung and springs in place
It looks really cool, all fresh painted and new looking. Gotta get some pics
tonight.
We had measured the perches, they were an exact match with the 27. We also
measured from drum face to drum face, the '74 model 30 is about 3" wider than
the 27!! (~51.5" vs. ~54.5") This is not a bad thing, can only help with stability.
I will probably look into spacers for the rear wheels since there will be so much
difference in the track. I'll now have to be concerned with my 33s and rubbing
since they will be pushed farther out, combined with reducing my front shackles
from 1.25" lift to 1/2" lift. I do run bumpstops 2" longer than stock, so that
should help.
So that's where it stands now. My wife and I will be going to our cabin from
Thurs until next Tues for a nice vacation, so I'm losing the next week of garage
time.
Hopefully, next Tues I can start on the new braided stainless extended brake
lines, the new drag link and tie rod, fill the pig, attach the front drive shaft and
breather, check ubolt torque and start to adjust the brake shoes.
Once I get that done, I'm going to pull the rear axle shafts and backing plates
and install my new 11" rear drums.
Hope you all have a great and safe holiday. Sometime over the holiday, give
some thought to the fallen veterans who gave it all. I'm going to Boalsburg, PA
(near State College) for Memorial Day, it's reported to be the birthplace of the
first "Memorial Day".
Happy Trails,
