I plan on swapping out my current 4 cylinder with a 258. I already ahve the engine and t-176 transmission. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what else I would need to do to make this swap. I know the t-176 is a couple of inches smaller than the t5. I would like to do my homework before I start this so I can get it all done ASAP. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm sure you know you'll need the proper bell housing. The T-176 came factory in '86, so the parts should be easy to find. I would replace the clutch while you're in there. I'm not sure of the driveshaft lengths, but they may be a little different than the T-5. You'll like the T-176, other than the lack of an overdrive. It's a solid tranny.
BTW, where do you live in western Michigan? I lived in Hastings for a while, and worked in K-zoo, and B.C.
Have fun.

the bell housing lines up since both the 258 and t-176 came out of an 84 cj7. i think the t-5 is a couple inches shorter but not sure, I'll have to check into that. should I need to do anything with my t case since the transmission is shorter? BTW I live in Coopersville.

The crossmember should already have the proper holes drilled for your T-176 mounting position. If there is a few inches difference, you'll probably need different driveshafts. The Dana 300 will bolt right on to the tranny with no problems.
Where is Coopersville? What's it near?

Coopersville is halfway between Grand Rapids and Muskegon
