Last week my ZJ ran fairly well. An occasional jolt now and then, but nothing too major. But this weekend she started to run worse than ever. At times I thought she was going to stall. Last night I barely made it home.

(For you who don't know what I'm talking about, I've all but monopolized this forum with this thread (http://www.ilovejeeps.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1366) and this one (http://www.ilovejeeps.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1723).)

I took my trusted old digital multimeter and checked the resistance of the spark plug wires. Everything was just fine (thanks to Lou C for providing the numbers). I checked the TPS (thanks to MaineZJ for the info on how to do it), and it worked just fine. Despair was setting in, big time.

After checking and double-checking everything, there was only one thing left that I could think of doing myself. I decided to make sure all the spark plugs were adequately tightened (those of you who have been following this soap might remember that the problem went away when I replaced the plugs, then came back two weeks later). I could tighten a couple of plugs maybe a quarter of a circle, but that was it. When I started her up to drive her into the garage I thought I could sense that she ran smoother than usual, but it was hard to tell.

Anyway, this morning she ran as good as ever! Not the slightest jolt on the way to work. Strong as an ox. Even on good days I could usually feel a few jolts, but today there was none at all. I even tried to provoke the behavior, but couldn't. While it's too early to be certain, it looks as if she's cured. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I'd like to thank all of you who helped me with this problem. I've learned a lot about my Jeep from this, and I appreciate very much the concern you guys have shown, and the efforts you have made to help me out. Last but not least, a big thanks to Tiffster for providing this excellent forum!

Just thinking of the advice I got from the professional mechanics here (replacing valve springs @ $500) makes my wallet hurt. :(

Always check spark first. Follow this rule and you will be a professional mechanic yourself. hehe

What's the old saying: "It's always electrical, .............unless it's fuel."
