I tend to think the XJ could go up in value over the comming years now that production has stopped , what do you think?

I share some of your optimism. I'm fairly certain that the used market will not ramp-off as rapidly as it had in the past (looking at what a '87 XJ cost in '97 versus a '91 today)...
I'm thinking that the "bottom-dollar" values will fix in each market and stay there pretty steadily. Being a unibody vehicle, I don't see the XJ as being a long-term player in the market segment; it will die quietly and be remembered fondly (remember the 350CID Chevy Nova?).
However, I'm certain that the XJ you buy today (any year) will not out-perform (not even keep up with) inflation, still resulting in a net loss for the vehicle (just hopefully a little bit slower than in previous years).
I think so too, it may take a while. If you go back as far as I do, you would remember the Classic Mustang era '64-68, could be had very cheap in the early 70's. But I'm sure with the kewl looks of the XJ and all the goodies that can be had for one; they will always be an item of interest.

I believe the first year downsized Cherokee may draw some money in the future, I was reading in I believe it was JP magazine that the '84 Cherokee is one of the top ten world renowned vehicles, they stated it is the vehicle that started this big sport ute craze, the other cars that were on the list with the jeep make this seem like quite an honor for the Cherokee.

I don't really see the XJ going up in value, because they are all over the place. There plenty to go around. Maybe the oddballs like the briarwood or '96 classic that you don't see many of but other then that there isn't really a shortage.

That is very true about the cherokee being plentiful, but I still believe that the '84 model (being it was the first year) may draw some money, and I really kind of doubt that there is a plentiful supply of '84's, most models I see for sale are '87's and up, when the market really began to boom for the Cherokee, earlier year models werent built in near the number of the later model Cherokees

I think it will take a while for it to go up in value. Just like any classic car will after so many years.

to be honest i don't see that happening at all. they stop making models of cars all the time and the XJ is just like any other car/truck that gets discontinued. I mean to us its not but for the market and the other people buying them not like us, who don't actually take them off road and lift them and do modifications.

i was interviewed by Land Rover and a marketing firm about this very subject. they wondered if the Cherokee community would start appreciating the value of the XJs.
my answer to them was this
you cant compare the limited numbers of imported defender 90s for 3 years
to
the mass production of domestic XJs for 18 years
i believe that there are simply so many that the value cant go up much, just too much supply. and value is really the end result of a demand and supply equation.

yeah i think that the cherokee will go up in value. personaly i think the 2 doors will go up more because i dont really see to many of them, and the cool thing is i own one. i have a 84 cherokee chief, but i have some problems with it. it has no floor and a blown 2.8. and a kinda junky interior. but thats ok.
