To Whom It May Concern:

As an off-road enthusiast, I’m increasingly concerned at the rate of closures of public lands in our state. It’s evident the politically correct philosophy driving these closures places plant and animal’s interests over man’s, with no compromise acceptable. It seems that one broken plant stem is justification to close thousands of acres. While an exaggeration, we’re getting closer to that point every day.

I heard a young lady at the Ridgecrest Desert Advisory Council meeting June 16, 2001 say, “a single human footprint can damage the environment.” While theoretically possible, this is a ridiculous statement and is typical of the mentality driving the fringe movement to rid our public lands of OHV’s.

Responsible recreation on public land is a right of the American citizen, and little or nothing is being done to mitigate our losses and the devastating affects on OHV’ers this philosophy is having on our sport. There are more closures every month, while the BLM uses over 40% of our budget to aquire new lands, all off-limits to OHV use.

As we’re forcing more people to share less acreage, it becomes increasingly difficult to both preserve the environment and insure a degree of safety to the users, further fueling the closures. This is a slippery slope with the loss of all public land access rights by citizens at the bottom. With less than 5% of public lands currently open to off-roaders, the toe of the slope is dangerously close for us.

As heavily funded environmental groups continue to leverage the Environmental Species Act (ESA) with litigation aimed at both the private landowner and the government, it appears that no area is safe from closure. Our state consists of vastly varied eco systems, each housing species unique to it. Groups like the Center for Biological Diversity have developed a profitable cottage industry identifying rouge species of plants and animals specific to individual public areas, and using such to litigate, ravaging our BLM’s budget and the BLM’s ability AND motivation to fight the next suit.

Politicians seem hesitant to step in for fear of being labeled “Environmentally Unfriendly”, and the next target of the cash rich special interest groups along with the accommodating media.

I urge you to take a look at the logic and tactics employed by these fringe groups, along with their motivation, and decide for yourself to support local off-road group’s efforts to maintain a foothold against this oppressive philosophy destroying our sport.

Thank you for your time.
