Hi, I have a 93 XJ sport. Recently when i went to start my Jeep, I turned my key all the way forward and everything was normal (radio, buzzer, dome light, etc.). But, when I tried to turn my engine over all power failed so i let off. About 1minute later everything was back to normal. This happens over and over until finally it cranks and starts but then it wont idol. I have to keep my foot on the gas. Fuses are good and battery terminals are new. Is it an ignition problem??? If you can help me please do!
Thanx in advance,
Jeremy

I would check the connection on your battery terminals. I know you said they were new, but check the connection anyway. Also check the connection on the back of the alternator.

Also have the alternator itself checked. I had similar problems when my alternator went out.

Also symptoms of a failed battery (shorted plate or the like)...

Check the available voltage on the battery posts before during and after cranking -- should not dip below 10v

Does your Jeep havee a tilt column, and if so, iis it really loose (meaning you can move the wheel up, down, and around without too much effort)? This looseness can cause poor connectivity for the starting circuit and is remedied by either ttaking off the steering wheel and tightening the two screws down there, or if the column is too far damaged, replacing the steering column itself. My '88 had to undergo the latter of these chioces, and it wasn't easy by a little bit!

Sounds like a bad neutral safety switch. I'm not sure where it would be located, but probably on the shifter or on the transmission itself. Good luck.

You might consider checking the harness and the ignition switch under the dash panel. You could have overheated wiring and a ignition switch going bad.
