I have noticed that my steering is getting a little goofy over the last few days. When turning it tends to "stick" slightly, like I'm getting more resistance in the turn. It seems to occur at various points in the turn but at no specific point at direction of turn. I have checked the steering stabilizer and it is dent free. The rest of the steering hardware seems to be OK too. Any ideas? My only thought left is the Power Steering pump. Has anyone had there pump go? What are the sympotoms?
Thanks

Sounds like the pump or a belt. More a belt check your belts for gaps/cuts/etc.

I didn't think the steering in a YJ had a belt, but I'll look at it tonight. Thanks.

It's not a seperate belt, your Jeep will have a serpintine belt , that drives the power steering pump. It's the same thing as mine. COOCH is right , it's probably starting to slip, or your pump itself may be going bad.

Yea sorry just getting back, the belt is most likely a serpentine belt it could be worn in spots so when that spot goes over the powersteering pulley it slips. For your sake I hope it is the belt. A LOT less $$ than a new PS pump.

Bring it over tonight and we'll take a look at it.
Normally erratic sticking is in the steering stabilzer or a bent rod end. If your belt is as muddy as the rest of the 4 banger ... I'm not going to rule out the belt.

Mine's been doing that since a wheeling trip 2 weeks ago. Have somebody turn the wheel while you're down in front of the Jeep. I'm getting a popping sound from my steering box when it's turned that wasn't there before. I tightened down all the bolts to the frame and it helped some. I'm adding a steering box brace once it gets here.

It turns out the problem was a combination of low fluid level and the bolts on the box being a little loose.
Thanks everybody for the input.
