You know, I do not 4 wheel per se, though I might make a brief foray through the woods occassionally and I can honestly say that I have had GREAT service from my 1990 XJ. In 17 years, not counting tires, batteries, gasoline, oils and filters, Brake shoes, brake rotors and drums, 4 new shocks, distributor caps, distribnutor rotors, spark plugs and plug wires; all of which I have replaced and consider expendible parts that are mileage related, I have had limited expense. All of these can be expected to wear out with use. They are expendible...like toilet paper....you have to buy them every week no matter what you eat... er... a.. drive.
Also I have spent around $2700.00 on legitimate repairs that I do not consider to be use and dispose of items. Today, my XJ sits in the driveway and I honestly think it is ready to go to the opposite US Coast.
The $2700.00 covered a new and upgraded double core radiator, R/R Overhauled engine, all new belts, hoses and radiator thermostat, replace an"accessary" belt pulley, R/R a plastic water overflow reservoir, New alternator, and a new water pump. Oh yes, there was that transmission fluid return line to the radiator that broke, New front end including upper and lower ball joints, steering dampner and at least one or two tie rod ends, R/R the windshield wiper assembly, reglue the rear view mirror to the windshield (Twice) and the anticipated fuel injector upgrade.
Otherwise, we have done great. Now $2700/17 years = $158.82 per year. Well no it does not include acquisition costs or routine (Oil, gas, etc.) maintenance but still I think that's pretty impressive. Just think how long I have been without a car payment or collision insurance.
AND, I still have it and honestly, I would leave for California with the full expectation of getting there OK. It starts everytime (uh, yes after a bit of cranking but it starts), goes whereever I ask (on the beach, through the woods, or down the highway) and even pulls my boat. The grandchildren do not remember when I didn't have it...now they drive themselves.
Yes, it has been quite a good deal!
Oh, Yeah, I just turned 210,000 miles on the body and 85,000 on this engine rebuild.
