How should a healthy TeraLow 4.0:1 for an NP231 sound when in 4WD-Low?
Mine is new, and it whines like an adolescent kid. Even when you put the tranny in neutral and coast with 4WDLow engaged, the whining continues; although as you slow down, it starts to go off and on.
I just want to know how much noise I should expect. Any feedback on noise, performance, or behavior would be appreciated.
TIA

FWIW:
Mine is pretty quiet.... but my friends whines a lot more. Both have held up well for 2 + years. I don't know why they sound different ???

It may be that you haven't used it enough yet I heard that they will quiet down after some use.
That's just a reason to go out and wheel more!

We changed a couple of things, and the noise is less now.
One: the mechanic noticed that there was driveline bind at the driveshaft double-cardan joint. He cleaned off some burrs that had developed and fixed the over-droop problem causing the bind.
Two: We changed the TC fluid.
Three: I AM driving it in 4WD Low a lot more during my lunch breaks in the local hills. It doesn't grind like it used to, and the whining is just the way it's supposed to sound. I like it now!
Lunch is so much better in a Jeep. :D

Where did the burrs in the double-Cardin joint develop? I'm installing a new Tom Woods CV (same as a double-Cardin) driveshaft next weekend so I want to be on top of that kind of problem before it gets bad.

In the double cardan joint, at the joint edges. If you take the shaft and articulate the cardan joint as far as it can go and try to rotate the shaft, you'll see where it binds. That's where the burrs were.

most all low range gears whine.

Thanks TJ Edge, I'll look the new driveshaft over carefully before it gets installed. I've heard some people will slightly relieve areas like that that could bind with a small grinder or Dremmel tool. Did you cure the over-droop with a center-mounted limiting strap?

Thanks TJ Edge, ... Did you cure the over-droop with a center-mounted limiting strap?
Didn't have to...We put a pair of slightly shorter Bilsteins in the rear. Their full droop is *perfect* as a limiter. Bilstein verified that their shocks are built to do this on lighter axles like a D35 or D44.
I had extra droop due to adding Bar Pin Eliminators & TeraFlex Rear Shock Relocation Brackets. This effectively shortened the shock mounting gap by 1" to 2". That's what led to the bind.
Be sure to check your full droop while on a rack or jack and test the driveline by spinning the tires. It was obvious when we did that, and the fix was just as obvious. :D
