Hello. I have a 95 GC with 318 v8 with 103,000 miles and have a power loss. Cranks fine when you floor it power seems off and runs out of breath @ 3000 and will not exceed 4500 so you have let up on the gas to shift. Problem first noticed with cruise control on going up a hill and check engine light came on. Has been at the dealers for a while but they found no codes so they do not know what to do. Their best guess is fuel pump. I have been driving it and it drives fine with a lite foot. Any ideas? Wilson

I noticed a distinct loss of performance this spring, which turned out to be caused by a cracked exhaust manifold. It's a common problem with the I-6 engines, but I'm not sure about the V8's. It's a fairly easy thing to check anyway.

Other than that, check the basics: spark plugs and wires, ignition coil, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter...

Another thing you might want to check would be the intake/exhaust system. Is your air filter in good shape? Also, are you running the original catalytic converter? The cat could very well be clogged which would make your engine perform like junk. Take a hammer or mag light and give the cat a good smack, if you hear a distinct rattle from inside the cat, the cat is shot. Not really sure of a good way to make sure it's not clogged, but it is a distinct possibilty. The cat on my 95 V8 went out around 95,000 miles.
