mjolman - first of all: welcome to this forum!

The two-letter codes indicate Jeep models, as you've probably discovered. Here's a short list of the most common ones on this forum:

CJ - Civilian Jeep, based on the WWII Army Jeep.
KJ - the new Liberty
MJ - Commanche (pickup version of thee Cherokee)
SJ - the old full size Wagoneer and Cherokee trucks
TJ - the new Wrangler with round headlights
WJ - the new Grand Cherokee (1999 up)
XJ - the Cherokee (1987-2001)
YJ - the first Wrangler with square headlights
ZJ - the first Grand Cherokee (1993-1998)

There's a more complete list on my web site (link in the sig below).

I can't help you with the Selec-Trac questions, and there is no real Full Size Jeep forum on ILJ, but I'm sure there are some knowledgeable people here who can help you out.

WJ - the new Grand Cherokee (1999 up)
XJ - the Cherokee (1987-2001) 1984-2001 RIP
YJ - the first Wrangler with square headlights 1987-1995
ZJ - the first Grand Cherokee (1993-1998) Not quite the first, as some of the SJ were also called Grand Cherokees

Missing from the list:
DJ: Dispatch Jeep, the 2wd Postals you used to see all over the place. There was a 4wd DJ released for Alaskan use.
FJ: Toyota
VJ: Jeepster Commando, mid-50s and late 60s versions, I don't have the production years with me right now.

Good list, TOOL!!

Is it a two door? If so it is a Cherokee. I know they built a few 4 door Cherokees, but not sure if any 2 door Wagoneers were built. In any case, the 2 door Cherokees are a little more rare than the Wagoneers.

Best part about the Cherokees are that they are heavy duty. 360 and 401 cid engines, available Borg Warner t-cases, TH400 tranmissions, D44 front and rear, factory 4 barrel carbs, et et et et.

If you do buy, just watch out for rust... especially on the frame rail along side the gas tank.
