Got a chance at a 74 CJ. 78 engine 30k on rebuild. Soft top fair.
Body clean n straight. Good rubber on spoker steel wheels. can be daily driver. I would be third owner. Pretty much a stock machine. No noticable leaks underneath. Watcha thinks its worth?

Thats's a good question. Have you checked on the prices of other Jeeps in your area. It seems to me like you can find older Jeeps for a lot less in some areas of the country than you can in other areas. Here in Denver I rarely see a Jeep worth owning for less than $2000 to $2500. I see prices on Jeeps from other areas for a thousand less. Spend a couple of weekends looking around to compare prices. If you're going to buy something that you will soon be addicted to, you should at least get a good deal on it.:D :D :D

By the way, what are they asking for it?

Well now thats a good question too. Seems the fellow that wants to sell it is kinda waiting for me to make an offer. Since he is the 2nd owner and this thing is in ok shape he dosn't really want to sell it . I don't think. But his wife is PG and I think she is putting pressure on him to get the cash or something. I'm torn cause next year it turns antique and it is well worth restoring. Still I don't have garage space nor the energy to take on another project. Besides I have an 82 XJ ltd that I've been playing with that has a lot more ameneties and a smoother ride. Tough decision. And out here in Seattle this thing will probably go for 2500 to 3500 as is. If only I was ten years younger I'b be on it like a chicken on a Junebug. :)

Did I hear the word restore? I have a 1974 CJ5 Renegade with 35,ooo original miles that has been restored from the ground up (that's right, no mud).

In my opinion if you are thinking of restoring a Jeep you should find one that is in very good condition. This will save you a lot of work in the long run. It may take some time to find a nice California or Southern Jeep but it will be worht it.

You will also want one that is some what unique. One of the early Renegades (Renegade I's and II's were limited production) is a good choice, a 74 or up Renegade (became a regular option), a Tuxedo Park Mark IV are different, a 73 red white and blue 'Super Jeep' is an option or a 75/76 Levis Edition CJ5. I would also say get one with a V6 or V8.

I love driving my 74 CJ5. The V8 has a lot of power and it seems everyone cant help but stare at a 28 year old Jeep that looks like it came off the show room floor. She is just a lot of fun to drive (I have 28 yr old original Goodyear Wintermark tires but I run 33 inch Super Swampers for fun!)

I think if you are going to put all of the time and effort into restoring a Jeep it might as well be one that is different. A good book to see many of the different Jeep models is 'Jeep:The Unstopable Legend'

Now if you are going to build the Jeep to have some fun four wheelin that is another story entirely!!

Just a few thoguths....

Howdy:

Sounds like you went to a lot of work on your CJ. Have you posted Pix anywhere. Was just over on looking at Just Jeeps and saw a nice CJ there. No it wouldn't be a ground up restore.
Just puting a new top on it as well as new paint. Probably Rhino-ing the tub. Bringing the upholstry back or maybe even special seats. There is little or no rust on it and the odometer shows 14796 miles. I'm not that familiar with pre Wrangler Jeeps so it would be a learning experience. Useage would be mostly top off rides to the local show n tell and around the roads at the ranch or to the mail box. For trail work I've pretty much retired from that form of fun to save what back I have left. But listening to you fellas here and reading the boards I'm getting the bug.

You know this Jeep Thing!? It gets into your head and ya can't get it out.

Just to to relate a little story...I've got two buddies. One, we shoot and golf. Got him into a XJ in 92. He just put a disc brake kit and a 2" lift on it. I don't know what else. Drives it every day. Won't let me have it. I doubt he'll let me drive it. The other buddy called me one Sat. morn a year ago. He's never owned a jeep.
Says get here right a way and check out this Sahara before I buy it. He found a Canadian 97 TJ with a 2" lift. Its really nice makes my hear beat. Told him to buy it or I would. Its all he talks about now. Wants a GC next. Nother buddy, Took him and his Mrs on a trail ride. He never Trailed before. He went out and bought a Blazer (TRAITOR!) My Mrs has a 2000 GC and she bought me my 82 XJ just so I wouldn't build her's for me. Go figure! Now she wants me to throw my beloved 77 K-20 Cheby out of the garage so the CJ can go in. That hurts me. What's a guy to do. C'mon fellas talk me out of this thing!;)

I do nto have any pics on the web as of right now of my CJ5. I am going to build a site shortly with pics of the restoration and the finished product.

I will post on here when I get the site up and running.

The Jeep thing is an adiction...some day I will have to go out and get a wife so there is someone to keep my adiction in check!

Good luck to you. But trouble is on the horizon if you get a Jeep Babe. Then the Jeep Thang grabs you both. Happened to me. Uh huh, it did... Its good and Its bad. Its good cause she likes Jeeps but its bad cause she want to drive all the trails. Then she'll want her own. Then She wants you to build her one and you don't have time cause you're working on yours and on and on and on. Oh but its a wonderful life!
