A couple of times I've hit the rev limiter when passing rigs going uphill on the highway. It would not be a big deal, except the rev limiter cuts the ingition entirely for a second, then it comes back on, then cuts out...etc.
The result is that half way through a pass the Liberty starts bucking so bad it feels like something is going to break.
You can make it stop by shifting, but IMHO it's plain dangerous to have this take you by surprise in the middle of a pass.

Anybody know how to disable the rev limiter? I know it's there for a reason, but the engine still feels strong at 6,000 RPM and I'd rather rely on my instincts for shifting than have this stupid thing cut the engine out entirely.
You'd think with all the computer controls it could just reduce the spark so you don't feel any effect except the revs stop climbing.

That doesn't sound good at all! I haven't run into this myself but haven't been doing much passing.

Sounds like the "G" limiter that was originally installed on the F-16s; until they figured out that some pilots could still control the aircraft at 9 g's and bring it (and themselves) home alive.

Perhaps you could initiate some correspondence with DC and see what they say about it; perhaps they can change it in future mods.

On the Mustang board that I frequent they talk about raising the rev limter a couple of hundred rpm w/ some sort of computer chip or something. Maybe that would be an option for you.

My suggestion is SHIFT! You are probably not making power after the rev limiter anyway. More noise does not always mean more power.

Are you talking about a "manual" KJ?

On the V6, horsepower and torque drop off significantly after ~5300 rpm.

On the I4, horsepower and torque drop off significantly after ~5200 rpm.

It's an automatic, but I often shift it myself to prevent lag or gear hunting when passing.

Both times I was just about to shift, but the rev limiter beat me to it. The engine was just starting to lose pullling power when the rev limiter kicked in. My cone air filter and free flow muffler probably extend the torque curve up a few hunderd rpm.

I wonder if MSD or anyone else makes a "Soft Touch Rev Limiter" that would work on a KJ????
