Has anybody rebuilt their steering box. I have some play in mine I am suspecting is the cause of my DW and a built one is $160. The rebuild kit is $32. I'd much rather rebuild than buy, just haven't ever done it before. Any info would be great.

Anthony, looking in my FSM, rebuilding the steering box looks like a hellish project. I think the NAPA rebuilds are about $75 get the one for the tow package. Regards, John V.

I don't have the FSM in front of me, but I seem to recall that a bit of play can be removed by a simple adjustment: Loosening a lock-nut, turning a screw slightly, then retightening the nut.

There is an adjustment on the box. Be careful though, if you over-tighten it, you can wreck it. I ended up taking mine to the dealer and they charged me about $50 or so to fix it. They ended up tuning it a month later and that was almost 3 years ago. No trouble since. I had a LOT of play. Now, my '93 ZJ had a bad bushing at the bottom. The pitman arm shaft was loose and this also caused extra play. I ended up buying a rebuilt unit from Auto Zone for about $160.
Good luck.
