I need to know a place where I can find which parts are interchangable between these 2 vehicles. Or if anyone can tell me what parts are interchangable. Where is a good place to get parts. Need hood, fenders, suits, taillights, gas cap, tons of stuff

Were those the ones advertised in the Thrifty Nickle? I was wondering if they were worth $2k, but never got around to go look at them.

Yes they are, and not even worth close to 2k. I'm gonna try and offer $750. The 73 has no hood & fenders. The 71 needs a right fender. Both engines and frames are good. But need lots of work

They are about an hour west of Colorado Springs. I'm looking to buy both, and sell the 71 cheap, even though it's the better one. And keep the 73, so I'm lookin to see what parts will switch w/ each other

Fenders and hood will not interchange between the two, as the 71 was the last year of the 81" wheelbase. The extra 3" on the 72-later CJ5 was achieved by adding a 3" section to the rear of the fender. If you look at some pics (I have none right now) you can see the added section.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

biggest concern isn't the body parts cause all I'll need is a 73's hood and a 71's right fender. Looking for the internals that switch. 71 has 4 speed, 73 a 3 speed, V6 on the 71 & I6 in 73
Not much is interchangable driveline wise. Things like the windshield frame, seats, rollbar, etc. will swap between the two. The drivelines are significantly different between the engines, trannies, t-cases, and rear axle. The rear axle on the '71 is offset, the '73 is centered. This is due to the different rear outputs of the transfer case. The bellhousing patterns are different and are what limit swaps of trannies and engines. The front axle will swap between the two although you wouldn't want to swap the '71's closed knuckle Dana 27 into the '73 since it has an open knuckle Dana 30.
The 4 speed in the 71 sounds interesting. Could it be a rare FACTORY T18 behind the 225? This has often been rumoured but seldom seen. Of course, it could be a swapped-in 4 speed too.
If it was me, I'd keep the '71 and part out the '73 :D I like the 225 over the I6.
Note that both rears are flanged 30 spline D44s. Good rear axles, although as said the '71 is offset. Either of these are desireable items to sell.
If you plan to part with the '71, you might want to post it to the For Sale forum on Sparky's Early CJ5 board:

Of course, if you decide to keep the '71, the Early CJ5 board is the place to get all of the info you need.

That's one of the things I found amusing about early 70's Jeeps. I have the FSM for the 73 lineup, and you could get the T18 4-speed with the 258 I6, but not with the 304 V8. With the 304 you had a choice - you got the T15 3-speed or the T15 3-speed. I would have loved to have a T18 in my 73 CJ5...

Hi, new to the forum. I believe the 4 speed tranny was a T-96 and as you said very rare and pretty desireable. I would still keep the 73 much easier to update and modify and the extra inches does come in handy. The offset D-44 are great for upgrading earlier jeeps but are near impossible to get replacement axles for. The floor mounted clutch and brake assymbly is kind of a pain in the rear bumper, if you upgrade to discs you cannot mount a bigger MC on the frame. Steering conversions for power are also tougher due to the Ross steering on the 71. You cannot put a body lift on the 71 without a steering conversion. All this from my time with my 71, I love the jeep, but all these mods were a little tougher than with the later jeep. I have done the SM-420 trans swap, D-44 front and rear, Hydraulic clutch and swing mounted pedals, Power steering and aux. heater. a 73 has alot of this stuff done from the factory. :D
