As I was getting ready to head home from Moab, the gear rack that works the ignition switch in the steering column broke. This didn't seem too bad at the time as we just hot wired the Jeep and drove it home.
Now I'm having a terrible time replacing the broken part and a rebuilt column costs $250 (the repair kit for the broken rack is ONLY $80!). I thought that I would post this question in General Tech because most all Jeeps supposedly use this same part so if you've done this repair on any Jeep please share your knowledge.
My question is, how do you remove the pivot pins for the tilting part of the column. They appear to be pressed in and they have a small hole in the center that is tapped. The broken gear rack that I have to replace has a slot in it that one of the pivot pins goes through so I have to remove the pin somehow. Do I need some sort of special tool?
