I can't find a T-18 locally, But I found a NP435 out of a '82 *250 4wd. Are these any good?

Ford and Dodge versions had these ratio's: 6.69, 3.34, 1.79, 1.00.
The GM version had these: 4.78, 2.39, 1.37, 1.00
There are a lot of them out there in Jeeps and from what I read, most people are pretty happy with them. The Ford version is better than the Chevy, but even that version has some variations in the crucial input bearing retainer size. The advantage of this transmission is the first gear is slightly lower than first on a wide ratio T-18. Second gear is also lower giving this transmission smaller a gap between first and second than the T-18. However, the 435's have been plagued with some problems...
They are supposedly more difficult to rebuild then a T18 and have been known to walk out of 1st gear at very slow speed on steep inclines. Wornout and expensive aluminum top covers. If towed even a short distance without being in gear and the transfer case in neutral will burn them up (torington bearing between 3rd and 4th)goes real fast and then melts the aluminum syncro hubs.
A VERY good contact for this question is Parts Mike. You can find him at: http://www.garlic.com/~junmike/
[note: I do not know anything abut this transmission. I spent a few minutes searching around the web for you and this is what I came up with.]

I think it is a good choice. Although I like mine SM420 out of a 67' Chevy 3/4 ton, It has the lowest crawl ratio 7 to 1

Thanks for the heads up. I'm planning on putting one in my TJ. I have one in my Bronco and love it. Very sturdy tranny. However, I was not aware of the lubrication issues when flat-towing. I think if one knows how it has to be towed, then it should outlast your Jeep. Besides I have hubs frt&rr on mine just for such occasions.
