I want to fit some different wheels, probably US Wheel Modular.

I need advice : I know about backspacing and stud pitch circle, but I never see in the forums or adverts any mention of the centre spigot hole size.

For example :-
http://www.northhantstyre.co.uk/f_a_qs_on_wheels.htm
says there are 5 dimensions that matter, but centre hole is not one of them.

My stock XJ alloy wheels have a 2.82" diameter centre hole which is an exact fit over a corresponding spigot on the hub. If the replacement wheels had a larger centre hole then surely they would not be centred precisely.

OTOH, if the replacement wheel had a smaller centre hole then they could not seat on the hub properly.

So is the centre spigot a standard size, or what?

The rims on your XJ are not hub-centric. Meaning they are not centered with the center hole of the rim. They are centered with your acorn style lug nuts.

As long as the center hole is bigger, you won't have a problem.

Stock Jeep wheels have the smallest center hole known to man.
Like Warlock said, the wheels centers on the cone shaped wheel nuts, not the hub center.

The only down side to wheels with larger center holes is that you can't re-use your Jeep center caps with them.

Thanks for the advice.

It was just that my wheels are such a good fit on the spigot that they stay in place even after I have removed the lug nuts, and I have to pull them off the spigot. The many other cars I have worked on have never seemed to depend for location on anything but the lug nuts themselves.

As for the wheel centres, it looks like the replacements come with their own :-

I can remember that it was once raised here (or maybe JU) as an issue whether these centres were plastic or steel. My present plastic stock centres are affected (like the alloy wheels themselves) by corrosion of the "silvered" (aluminium) decorative layer.

Give me chromed steel any day; at least you can keep it good by frequent polishing.

Don't be so sure that the center caps are included. Every set of wheels I have bought, I have had to purchase the centercaps and lug nuts seperately.

You can polish the plastic too to prevent the corrosion.
