Nuke

Advice needed again.
My reversing lights are intermittent, so today I decided to get the NSS off my AW4 tranny to clean it.
No luck. I took off the main nut and the smaller adjusting bolt, but the the switch body would not come off. Haynes says just "lift the switch off the shaft", but it won't lift off, even though I got a screwdriver behind it. It does swivel freely.
It is awkward beacause the exhaust pipe and an oil cooler pipe are in the way, but if I have to I will find a way of pulling it harder. Any ideas what could be holding it? Has anyone else found this problem? I know that plenty of others have done this job, usually at about 100,000 miles
.
So I have put it back together FTTB :(
