Hey Guys! 8)
I posted this question on the wrangler board....but you guys are always so helpful I figured I'd get an answer quicker here.

I need to get tow hooks welded onto the front of my jeep. I've called a few places, but none of them have the equiptment to attach tow hooks. Is there a certain "type" of shop I should be looking for?

My puppy's getting a/c installed in it today. I keep thinking of things I need to go do, then I remember I don't have my jeep! :cuss:
A few hours without that thing, & I go nuts! :jester:

Do you have a TJ or a YJ? In either case, I would not recommend having them welded on, unless both your hooks, and your frame/bumper are of the same alloy of steel. Welding dissimilar alloys together is possible, but I wouldn't trust it to be load bearing the way tow hooks are designed to be.

Typically tow hooks are cast, and your frame is forged and formed from rolled steel. It can be done, and it has been done, but I wouldn't trust it. Go with the typical tow-hooks that have a couple of holes through them. Then, just use a couple of grade-8 bolts, (or 10.8 metrics) and bolt them to your frame.

Thanks so much Jon! I won't have them welded. And I'll look for some Grade 8 nuts & bolts as soon as I get my baby back.
Take care! ~Lee 8)

Lee - Don't weld the hooks. Take them to Hunter Offroad in Tempe (480)557-7577 and get them bolted, or do the bolting yourself with at least Grade 5 bolts. Don't go to Desert Rat, except as a source FOR the towhooks.

This is the only time that Steel Horse actually makes a useful product, by the way. If that's all you find, don't worry about the bad reputation that Steel Horse has earned. Just avoid them for any other purchases you have planned.

Well, other than the fact they rust too. If the rust doesn't bother you, I would say go with Steel Horse here also.

I have only seen one incident, where a steel horse hook failed. It quite apparently had an extremely large amount of force exerted on it, at the time.

Since Steel Horse = Rust Magnet, I didn't feel like even mentioning that, but it is a valid point. :P
