So since it appears I can't get into tru 4WD because the valve isn't moving, should I replace the vacuum harness and valve, or should I just get a mechanical kit with a cable? If I go with a cable, what do I do with the vacuum harness?

I guess your vacuum activated front axle isn't working, because the former owner perhaps never had it in 4wd, or at least not often enough.
I think if you use your 4wdrive often enough and on a regular basis, the vacuum thing still works.
Although I heard it could still cause problems in cold climates when driving in reverse out of your driveway that goes uphill, if the system is still cold.
That's what I know from conversations with mechanics and YJ owners.

If mine wears out before I swap axles, I would put a mechanical actuator in there. More trustworthy IMHO.

Mine didn't work when I bought my YJ last Summer. The vacuum switch was bad, so I replaced it. Now the vacuum would switch sides like it was supposed to. But, the vacuum motor on the axle was also not working. At that point I said screw it and bought a posi-lock. One of the better things I've done to my Jeep.

I'd go with the mechanically actuated Posilock too. Those vacuum actuated disconnects were so much trouble that Jeep dropped their use with the introduction of the TJ.

I think that my posi-lock was one of the best mods that I've made to my Jeep. I broke my shift fork about a month ago and convinced the wife that I needed it to "fix"it. She bought it and I got the Posi-lock. I love it, it actualy gives you 2 wheel low for that extra pulling power when you need it. The install is a breeze. It only took about 2 hours start to finish. I highly recomend to anyone.

Go mechanical. I replaced the vacuum stuff on mine once already, and now it's acting up again...so my next fix will be a mechanical one of some sort.

I've seen them somewhere but, does anyone have a link, to find one of these Posilocks, online?

4WD Hardware offers those Posi-Locks in their catalog, and I bet on their website too: http://www.4wd.com

Thanks for the information. Sounds like a pretty good mod for this summer.

Hey,

Well, I realize this is a bit late but, I did get a cable actuator, while at Monteagle, last month.

I think I got a pretty good deal, $100 Dollars. It didn't take very long to install, either. I think we (my friend Jason and I) got it done, in less than thirty minutes.

I appreciate all the posts, regarding this.

BTW, I love the cable actuator. Nothing better than knowing that your ring gear is actually locked in position.

Well, I guess, as good of a price as you can get, is what you need to do. They will, however, retail for around $200 Dollars. You can probably find one, at a Jamboree, cheaper. You also may be able to find one, that someone is wanting to sell, for less. Like I said, mine cost me $100 Dollars, a really good deal, to me.

Or you could just lock the shift fork perminently into position.
TJs don't have the disconnect, so I don't see a big need for it unless you have a front locker.

Someone's selling a posi-lock on JU - asking $140
