View Full Version : What do you think of the jeep wave?
Personally, I think it's kind of gay. I will give a couple of fingers(not just one:)) or a nod but that's about it. What do you guys think?
edit: My vote was for "C".

I don't think that waving, in and of itself, is so bad. But, this whole institutionalized thing, with points and protocols seems more than a little silly.
I often wave at other Jeepers, but I don't need a website to tell me which vehicles are more deserving of a wave.
I checked "it's gay" (not that there's anything wrong with that!). But, that's probably too strong for how I really feel.
If you want to check out how many wave points you get, knock yourself out!
I guess I've about given up. I don't mind waving. Motorcycles do it -- esppecially Harleys (are you ready to call those guys gay?!!! Truckers used to when I drove 25 years ago. School bus drivers do. Started to get quite a few return waves last summer, but it kind of died last fall. Last month we went to AZ and Moab and we didn't get any waves. I'm figuring if Jeeps don't wave at the Jeep Mecca, why keep it up.
I'm always ready to give a return, though. :D

As mentioned in a previous post on this topic. I'll wave when I see a wave. But I don't go out of my way that often to initiate a wave. Most Jeep owners in my area don't understand it. :(

There are alot of Jeeps in my area, alot! Most of them are people who don't use the Jeep for off-road purposes. I don't know what everyone uses their Jeep for. I usually wave back when someone waves to me. Typically the un-modified Jeepers don't wave as opposed to the modified Jeepers, who have a tendency to wave but not every time. When it does happen though it makes me feel good. I don't know why but it just does. Most people riding with me ask "do you know that guy/girl?". "No" is my repsonse and then they look at me funny.

I wave... a lot... not everyone waves back, but so what, someday they will understand.

I know all the Jeepers and Jeeps in our area and my wave to them is more a greeting than the actual Jeep wave.
I like to wave at all Wranglers, if they show some kind of modifications, that enable them to use the Jeep off-road.
I wave to all CJ's, but my experience was, that most of them have their nose up too high - like the newer Jeeps were rice-burners. :(
But I don't see no sence at waving at Cherokees or Grand Cherokees, because they just don't understand it - at least here anyways!

I'll wave whem I'm out in the country. In town, there are WAY too many Jeeps to keep waving all the time. San Diego is a big city.

Sure!! Why not?? Half the Harley owners nowadays are powderpuff lawyers and accountants who want to "LOOK" bad, but would probably break down and cry if a drop of rain ever fell on their exfoliated little faces whilst driving! Anyone can buy a bike and a set of chaps and grow a beard and "Look" like a biker, but you can tell a REAL biker a mile away. (I used to hang with some Angels in my mis-spent youth ;) )
This point also holds true for most jeepers nowadays. Most of the "young-uns" don't understand the Jeeping history or mentality, they only know their jeep is cute, and for some reason, has an extra shift lever
I wave at other "modified" jeeps, or cute jeep-chicks ;) (I consider a beautifull jeep chick in a stock jeep a good mod :D )
My vote, "alternative wave"

The whole scoring thing is faggish,no one takes it serious right? As for just waving it's cool. I won't wave at Grands or Cherokees unless modified but all open tops get the wave. Keep it, toss it, not a big deal.

Hey now, Stubbs!!! Justa counter-sprocket-pickin' minute... I resemble that remark! LOL!!! Or, at least the beard and chaps part (traded my leather for Aerostich years ago, tho').
IMHO, that is a problem, but it's not just Harley owners. A good share of sport bike riders are the same way, unfortunately (posers, that is). Ugh.
But, we all still wave to each other -- it's a fraternity sorta thing. The sport is alive and growing. Unfortunately, I get so few returned waves while I'm in my TJ (usually blank stares), that it's nice to be on the bike.
Ride safe,

I always try to wave, sometimes I miss the moment. Its kind of hard to get that wave out there when a fellow jeeper passes down the otherside of the highway at 65 mph. So what if not everyone else does it, someday they may change their mind and always issue the jeep wave, until then I will keep waving! :)

Stubbs, whats that extra lever for? :D Is it an ejection lever, for if you don't like the passenger?
For that matter, whats the third lever for? :D
I wave, but don't get many back. A lot of dumb looks, but few waves. But I live in a town where mommy and daddy buys the cars for their kids.

Hmm, I allways thought is was extra, extra, super duper high speed.
That is until I pulled up on it one day on the highway and my front axle fell off :D

I'm in a rural area and I always wave. When I go to the city or travel on the Interstate Hwy, I get depressed and quit waving. As someone said above, the non-modified Jeeps tend to stare straight down the road with no recognition.
I have a YJ lifted 6 inches w/35" tires and flame colored scallops, I get quite a few waves when driving it and almost always get a response from another modified Jeep.
I have a TJ lifted 3 inches w/33" tires, it's yellow, I get looks but rarely a wave and only from modifieds.
I don't go for the rating thing at all or the official Jeep wave. I wave at a fellow Jeeper with no regard to his vehicles "Status".

Here in DooDaa, Jeepers wave at each other all the time. I was in Colorado Springs recently and no one waved the whole 2 weeks I was there. Recently, Cherokees have started waving to me, which is cool with me, I happily return the favor. It is funny, I also have a Corvette and we have been waving at each other for years, but the funny thing is the other day I was cruising in the Vette and a guy in a Jeep waved at me. I waved back without thinking about it until I realized I was not in my Jeep. I think that others can tell we are Jeepers even when we are not in our Jeeps. It must be the look on our face or something. I was recently at a convenience store and there was a cool Jeep out at the pump and there was about 8 people in the store and I was trying to tell just by looking at the people who owned the Jeep, I guessed correctly. Have any of you tried to guess who owns a Jeep when looking into a crowd? It is actually kind of fun. :)
Yeah, if I was in a smaller town or something I would probably wave more often. There are so many Jeeps here it's not even funny. I would have to be constantly looking for jeeps to get every wave in. Everyone drives an SUV up here. It's crazy.

Whatever, I go to Wichita occassionally for meetings. I get waved at a lot while driving my TJ. Wichita has that small town mentality even though from where I stand, it's a big city.
EP, I read an article recently about SUVs that claimed that 92% of all 4wd vehicles purchased are never driven off road. Guess that explains why DC is discontinuing the good stuff to build Liberty's etc.

I only return waves, because most jeepers down here don't understand. I'll would wave at modified jeeps, but that still doesn't mean they use them. I always wave at lifted XJs, but there isn't too many of them.
I try and wave, but as has been stated, there are far too many Jeeps in my area to wave at'em all. (Well there can never be TOO MANY Jeeps ;) )
Since I got my ZJ in Sept 2000, I have only seen two other modified Jeeps in my area. One a lifted ZJ and the other was yesterday: it was a CJ not sure of the year. It was modded out to the max (Warn winch, and other goodies up front, big meats and a lift). He saw my ARB on front did a double take, smiled and waved.
To date that's been my only wave.
Zac
Sorry to intrude on you guys over here in the wrangler forum, but I like to read the technical posts on axles and gearing.
I learned the Jeep wave in the 60s from my Dad. He and his brother always had Jeeps, lots of them. I continued this tradition when I got my first Jeep in 1971. I always wave to all SWB Jeeps.
This "points" system is a humorous way to break in newbies to the Jeep wave, I never took it seriously.

I wave at any rig, not just Jeeps
Its kind of funny I get more waves from yota, ford, chevy guys than I do from Jeep owners especially the CJ drivers around here.

For a while my wife was driving the TJ to work, every morning she met a Yellow TJ and a Red TJ, both waved to her every morning. Now that she's driving the car again they don't wave, she seemed kinda bummed by it. I figure it's a good thing, they were waving at the Jeep and not my wife. ;)

I must have missed something, what the hell is this point rating thing?
It's this simple, you wave because YOU have pride in your Jeep and other people that KNOW feel the same way!!!
It's just like everything else, too many Jeeps equals dilluted pride!!!
It actually pisses me off when somebody who obviously likes off-roading(MODIFICATIONS) doesn't wave.

I know what you're saying whatever.
Having owned a CJ here in the Springs for over 7 years now, I have noticed attitudes have changed...for the worse. The first few days I drove my Jeep I had people waving and talking to me at stop lights and in parking lots about "Jeep Stuff". Now, I try to wave at other CJ's and they usually are too busy trying to look tough, like the Terminator, hiding behind their "blade" sunglasses.
On the weekends, the hills above the Springs are filled with an even mix of 4X4's and passenger cars; the latter are more than likely just there for a quiet place to smoke crack...but that's another subject.

I think "The Wave" gets discussed WAY too much, personally.:D I generally always wave at fellow Jeepers if there's a remote chance they're clued in, and always return waves.
However, it's just a friendly gesture so we shouldn't get all that worked up over it. Sports car owners back in the 50's and 60's waved and flashed their lights on the highways as they passed each other. You know, MGs, Triumphs, Austin Healys, SPORTS cars. Harley riders do the same thing... though it's very subtle if you're cool. A lifted couple of fingers or a nod as they pass each other. Corvette owners do it too, as do any unique or specialty vehicle owners do.
Unique vehicle drivers have always waved at each other so I hate to say that it's not just Jeepers that wave at each other. But I doubt the subject gets discussed nearly as much with them as it seems to be with us Jeepers.:D

I have been a Jeeper since '86 and a biker since '82. I'll wave at just about anybody. 'Cept those Harley riders. Only cause they won't wave back.
As for Jeeps, I wave at all CJ, YJ & TJ's. It's the Brotherhood and Sisterhood of Jeep Owners. Or would you rather be going to the Saturn reunion every year. I personally think it's for re-education or service.

The wave is what it's all about. Owning a Jeep places you in another realm...or maybe I'm just in another realm. Keep waving.

As long as someone waves in any fashion I like it. If they give a head nod or signal it is ok also. The rules on the wave are a little silly.
'Cept those Harley riders. Only cause they won't wave back.
Must be the area of the country. When riding with the top down early last spring with a Jeep full of family, I waved at a group of Harleys coming at us, and got a wave back from the whole bunch! :D

Must be. There are some polite Harley guys but I think it has something to do with the fact at Milwaukee is near by. Most of these guys & gals are just pissed off that they paid so much. :lol
