View Full Version : Will Changing Tires to 30" or 31" damage the Trans

I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee 5.2 Laredo and I was asking some advice from a Jeep mechanic.

He told me that I should not change to bigger tires nor add a lift because this could burn out my transmission which was mentioned in there training for fixing the Jeep.

They had several customers with damaged transmission due to this.

Is there any truth in this? Since I am planning to add a 2 inch lift and change my tires to size 30 or 31.

Thanks,

Raffy

My advice is to find a new mechanic. :(

Sure 33 or 35 inch tires are harder on the tranny, but even 31s are a very small change from stock. One trip pulling a large trailer will put more wear and tear than an entire year of oversized tires.

A buddy had a problem with noise from the t-case on his bone-stock XJ. The mechanic noticed some evidence that he had been off road, so he stopped working and told my buddy that he had damaged his case off-roading. I demanded to see the rig while it was still on the hoist, and after 2 minutes I tracked the problem to a loose t-case linkage bracket.
It has been my experience that most Chrysler dealer mechanics are junior mechs who can do an oil change or follow an install guide, but they really know next to nothing about the vehicles they service. Sounds like your mech falls into this catagory.

Chris is right. Your "mechanic" isn't much more than a wrench-monkey. Key identifier: "It was mentioned in our training" - basically means he has no REAL experience and is only going off what they told him in "training"

Thanks, I am quite relieved to hear this.

So now I can start planning for this modifications.

Read up on the maggnsun-moss act, for U.S. Jeepers...

A good source for info on this act (http://www.mlmlaw.com/library/guides/ftc/warranties/undermag.htm)

Lets you know the limitations and requirements of warranty providers.

You should tell your mechanic to check out ILJ, he might learn something useful! :D

I fully agree with, and second everythig said.

Some of these "mechanics" , well, that word is just a joke when describing them.

I had the so called "head mechanic" from the dealership that my Jeep was purchased from tell me they did not know how to fix it, because they couldn't bring up any codes off the computer and therefor had no idea what was wrong. Honestly, I don't think the code would have helped him one bit

And I get to take it back :o WooHoo !
