This may be be a stupid question, but does a (OX) locker double as a carrier?

Yes. The OX locker has a new carrier. All but the "lunchbox" lockers (ie: lockright) have new carriers.

Am i correct that only the lunch box lockers "lock rights" alow for gear changes. Ive never really looked into any thing other then a lockright, so Im not sure if the full carrier style can aceept different gears?

The lunchbox locker's main advantage is that it can be installed without removing the differential from the housing. This means you don't have to set the gears. They never get disturbed. Your gear ratio selection is limited to the split ( if there is one ) of your stock differential. The full case lockers allow you to choose which case you need (if there is a split ) in order to accomodate the gear ratio of your choice. With a full case diff, the gears MUST be reset.

A couple of quick points. We installed a carrier type locker into a friends AMC 20 last week. Although you're right about not having to reset the gears, the carrier needed to be removed because the cross pin wouldn't come out due to the ring gear being in the way. We checked the Dana 30 in the front and it was the same thing. We had already installed new 4.56 gears and new carriers so I don't know if this applies to stock carriers and gears.
The other thing is that if you replace the gears, the diff will have to be set up again regardless of whether you change the carrier or not. You were right to point out that all gear ratios will not necessarily work on on all carriers. Not everyone know this and it affects the cost and complexity of "just a changing gear ratios".
