You can build an on board air tank for around $150. My buddy built one and runs air tools of it. He loves it. I found a thread he posted on how to build it.

Here it is:

I have always wanted to purchase a Powertank, (on-board co2 system) to use in my jeep for airing up tires and running air tools, but I can't bring myself to spending over $340.00 on such a system. I just finished putting together my system tonight and it works great! I did the complete set up for $150.00. Here is a list of prices and were to purchase the items at:

ABC Fire Extinguisher
2603c Poloron Dr, Jacksonville 982-3981

10lb recondition CO2 bottle converted to a cga 320 valve for used with beer dispensing systems. Cylinder comes filled on purchase. $59.95

Fermentables Home brew supply
2300 Parkway, North Littlerock 758-6261

Dual gauge CO2 regulator with a regulated output up to 160psi. $79.95

Misc. connectors at any hardware or farm store. $10.00

Once you get the regulator you will have to purchase a 1/4" male to male air line fitting and a quick connect body air fitting. Remove the regulated output fitting that came with the regulator and install the 1/4" male to male connector and then attach the male quick connect fitting. ENSURE you use Teflon tape on all the threaded parts.

Insert the nylon o-ring that comes with the regulator on the input side and attach to CO2 tank. This completes assembly. Attach a standard air compressor hose and turn on CO2 tank main valve, check all fittings with soapy water for leaks.

I am by no means a compressed gas expert, but it was a very easy project.

Sounds like the right set-up...

... have you had to fill it yet?

My buddy said he gets his tank filled up at a welding supply shop or a fire extinguisher shop for like $10. Keep in mind most places will do a CO2 tank swap as opposed to a fill up so if you get an old beat up tank I wouldn't worry about it.

Cool - most of the shops I work with won't exchange anything but their own tanks - the hydrostatic recertification requirements and all of that...

... Still, sounds like a good plan and with the sources you listed for the regulator and all, maybe happenin' here before too long...

... I'd still like to get a good source for Scotty bottles (SCBA stuff) - filling em is a PITAS around here!
