During the Soviet era, a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Lada Niva were to compete in a round-the-world race. They went on roads and off-road, crossing rivers, mountains, and deserts. Naturally, the Jeep finished months ahead of the Lada. This was mentioned only briefly in American press and no-one raised an eyebrow.
When the Lada finally crossed the finish line, the Soviet press printed the following:
"The patriotic heroes of our Great Motherland performed well in this shining example of Socialist engineering, and finished in an honorable second place. The imperialist lackeys in their expensive but low-quality vehicle came in next-to-last."
