I have a '77 cj5 with 304 - t-150 - dana 20. And just found a guy that wants $450 for a t-18a with the 6.32:1 1st gear mated to dana 20 t-case that he took off of a '78 cj5. Is this a good deal? And will my clutch work on this new setup? (I just replaced it) Thanks for any help...

I don't know about your fit, but I do think that is a steal for a T-18A in good working order. The local 4x shop rebuilds them and makes them look purdy and sells them for about $1200. I sold one as is for $600 since I needed the AA adapter plate for an extra $600:(

I guess it depends on the area... I don't think that's a steal. I'd expect $300 or so in my area, unless it was rebuilt, or at least had new bearings installed. And D20s are "take with" items, a D20 shouldn't add to the price.
But some areas command higher prices, and I know there are areas like ontherocks described.

I'd say pay the $450 and install it. As for the clutch, the input shaft on both trannies is 1 1/8 - 10 spline, so I'm thinking the clutch would be the same. However,I recommend you put a new clutch in. You don't want to have to drop this tranny again for a clutch or TO bearing in 6 months.

Once it's in, you'll forget all about what you paid ;)
I've been running a 6.32 T18 in my '71 CJ5 for about 7 years... :)

Good luck!

I pay $60 apiece for T-18s with 6.32 1st. Where do you guys get these inflated prices?
If it's a Jeep T-18A mated to a Dana 20 already then you can save the $390 for adapter (not $600!) and just bolt it in. $450 is not a bad price in that case.

I sold my T-18/D20 for $1000 in August 2000. Although the T-18 was nearly new - had less than 1000 miles on it.
