I am using the Garvin software to create routes in Moab based on the Charles Wells book, "Moab, UT Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails."

I started plotting Top of the World and Hell's Revenge; but they don't seem right to me. The starting point for TOTW looks likes it's in the middle of nothing!

What am I doing wrong? *Am* I doing anything wrong?

I'm using the GPS coordinates from pages 255 & 257.

The location of Hell's Revenge looks about right. I've never done TOTW though.

So, I guess I'm just missing all the data that leads up to getting to the starting point? They're not just "out there somewhere" like they seem to be?

Forgive my ignorance. I'm just learning all this GPS stuff.

You need to know if the published waypoints were taken before or after the "civilian use" accuracy was improved.
As I remember (which I don't do well anymore) it was around April of 2000.
The accuracy of GPS receivers went from something like +/- 100 to under 15 feet.
Also the transfer of real waypoints I have marked on my GPS to my home computer do not look like the same places so I suspect there is some "pinpoint" transfer difference. But when I recall use the "go to point" waypoints on my GPS they are within the 15 foot range if they are a hill top.
The best way to keep them is to mark them in the GPS memory and use the home computer to just name them, save them to a ZIP disk, but keep them stored in the GPS memory if you have the newer large 32+ memory cards.
