View Full Version : Hub Spacer
Does anyone know where i can get the little spacer that goes betwen the locking hub and the wheel? I was told i have to get it from a junk yard...and all the junk yards around here have no CJs.
Ideas?
EDIT:
Thought of 2 more questions. Does anyone know the gear ratio rating on the AMC 20s? Mine has an A. Thats all i can see.
Also...The guy i bought the jeep from said be droped in a 304 from a Matador. Is that 304 they put in the CJ orig the same as the 304 they put in the matador?
Thanks a ton!

I'm having a real hard time picturing the part you're talking about. Check a 4WD Hardware catalog; they always seemed to have a real nice breakdown of axle parts.
Don't know on the AMC 20
The 304 is the same engine, the 360 and 401 V8s also used a block with the same dimensions should you wnat to drop one in instead. Look under the drivers side motor mount for a raised casting of the block size.
"A" code should be 3.54, open.
Awsome thanks for the info.
I was talking about my rear end. The AMC Model 20 "WW2" helmet style. The danas have the ratio printed on them i guess and the AMC uses letter codes. That what i read in the 4wd catalog anyway.
Thanks again!

Yes Adam, the code for letter A I gave you, 3.54, open, is for the AMC model 20 rear.
However, you can never be sure, because a previous owner might have changed gear ratios. It is best to physically check the numbers on the gears (Etched onto the gear body) and/or count the teeth on the ring and the pinion. As an easy way to check, jack up the rear. Put a chalk mark on the tire and the driveshaft. Turn the tire exactly one revolution while watching the driveshaft. If the driveshaft turns just over 3 and a half turns, you've got the 3.54 ratio.
Neither Jim nor I know what little spacer you may be talking about between the locking hub and the wheel. As Jim said, get a catalog from 4 wheel drive hardware www.4wd.com or from Quadratec www.quadratec.com
Each of these catalogs have very good exploded diagrams that should show the part you are looking for. Once we can identify what you need, we can direct you to a source.
Here is what one of my hubs looks like now

Here is what the other one looks like. I circled the piece that i need. Maybe this will help.

Adam, it appears that you ae looking for the locking hub body.
Do you only have the end piece, the part that you turn with your fingers to lock/unlock? Or maybe you don't even have that?
I would just get a new pair of locking hubs. Should be about $100, maybe less depending on brand.

What lynn said...
Pictures are great, aren't they? Something about being worth a thousand, or something like that ;) Enjoy the CJ
Jim
Well i have a set up locking hubs but the guy at the parts store pointed out that i need the body as you put it. He told me that the only place i can get it is a junk yard probably. I looked in the 4wd catalog and didn't see it but i might just be blind.

Thats what i have now.

Hmmm, I'm only familiar with Warns, and they always come with a body. Didn't realize Superwinch doesn't 8O
Look at the pics for the Warn hubs. You'll see that they have the body you're looking for.
First, I'd try to exchange the Superwinch units for Warns. They will probably cost more, but should have everything you need.
But, maybe you can't exchange them for some reason.
If that's the case, call the guys at R&P parts in Oregon, they may be able to help you if you explain your dilemma. Perhaps they would have a body laying around somewhere.

Jim, we're approaching that 1000 mark on this thread. Somehow, I'm guessing there's alot more to come :)
Adam, let us know...
Thanks again....and again...and again...
I'll be sure ot let ya know
