I'm looking at a 86 CJ7 with 120K miles and some problems for $2000. I test drove it, and its making some noise which seems to be transmission problems and I dosen't have much for brakes. When it is running it makes a costant noise but when you put the clutch in the noise slows down and then stops, people have told me this is the throwout bearing. My question is, can you or is it smart to replace the bearing by disconnecting the drive shafts and moving every thing back or more serious, or better yeat should you I just replace the clutch when were in there as well? I'm not a mechanic, so I don't know if I personally would be able to do the work, although I would like to try, maybe. Any Information that you can give will help me out, thanks.

Drop the driveshafts, pull the transmission/transfer case unit, replace the clutch, resurface the flywheel and replace the throwout bearing; basically save the labor of having to do it again. It's shadetree mechanic problem and fairly easy, but no offense if you have to ask these questions you might want to buy a pizza and some beers to get someone to help you.

To add a little warning, the rear crossmember/transmission mount supports the motor so you will need to support the rear of the motor before you removing it. Another thing to consider is that usually a throwout bearing will make noise when you step on the clutch. It sounds to me like whatever is making the noise is in the transmission or transfer case because you said that the noise slows down and then stops when you push in on the clutch. It sounds like a bearing in the transmission is making a noise and then when you push in on the clutch whatever is making the noise stops spinning and making the noise.
