I have a 86-CJ7. Whats the best way to eliminate all the vacuum hoses? Ive already removed the two air injection tubes to the front exhust and the converter and just pluged the vacuum valve hoses but I'd like to get rid of all of them.
What I want is just a simple 258 six with a carb.

Do a search in Google for "nutter" - it's a modification that eliminates the computer, but may not be legal (smog reasons) in some areas, even though I know a few folks that have made this mod and still run cleaner than the standards.

Go to a Howell fuel injection setup.

Thanks for the help.
Sorry for taking so long to get back.

After you do the "Nutter Bypass" Then this would probably be the Minimum vacuum hose setup:

neophyte TJ-owner question here:
what does it do to eliminate the vacuum hoses? what are the pros/cons of it, etc?
just wanting to expand my general knowledge!
TIA

I don't know what a TJ has under the hood, but the 86 CJ7s had a fairly extensive vacuum system that controled the carb. and exhaust system emission control. A lot of clutter that really didnt do much good. This is my first Jeep and I didnt know anything about them just five weeks ago, but Ive learned a lot since. Thanks to this site and others.
My engine compartment now is free of clutter, my engine runs better than ever, my friends are impressed, and the women swoon!

My opinion is that most people who strip off all the polution stuff realy had fixed one small problem vacuum leak and now the engine runs better.
From another post on removing the EGR valve:

If I am wrong please correct me.
Actually what it does is reduce the temperature of the combustion chamber. This reduces the formation of NOx that occures when the temp reaches over 2,500*F. Now this will also help reduce predetonation and pinging, extend the life of your valves, pistons, reduce over heating. Shall I go one? :) Hmmm. I wonder how many people have removed their EGR valve and now complain they have to run premium gas which is actually a slower burning fuel and only good if your running higher compression to take advantage of it's characteristics. In an unmodified stock engine your just wasting exspensive gas. Just another reason to fix your polution equiptment instead of dumping it. So you can see it will actualy help your performance with it installed and operating correctly.
Clearing the Smoke (http://www.babcox.com/editorial/cm/cm60254.htm)
Also the The Vacuum Advance lines are importent in gas milage and performance. Mechanical advance is not enough unles you run at one particular RPM.
The PCV valve is important in evacuating the crankcase of combustion products that would othereise stay trapped in your engine and cause problems.
Heat risers that will keep fuel from pooling inside your intake manifold in cold wether causing you to run either to lean one moment and waste gas because of improper combustion to running to rich when the air sucks the gas off the floor of the intake manifold and fouls your plugs and waste gas.
Exhaust stoves that keep moister from freezing on the booster jets and ruin performance in cold weather (Carbs only, FI does not need it).
Carbon canisters that trap gas vapors and prevent gas leaking from tank in a roll over. Not the canister themselves but part of the system.
I don't think there is aything wrong that a vacuum leak fix or a clean carb won't fix. When you strip all that stuff off, your just returning the engine to close to how it ran when new with all the "Smog Stuff"
