So I buy this 80 CJ 7 cheap cause the guy thinks it has a blown head gasket. Well it was really just a stopped up radiator:). Since it had been sitting 10 years I replaced the fuel system did the carberator. etc etc and we fired it up. It ran good... no smoke good oil pressure ah life is good. Since the engine is good lets do a lift ok its lifted.
I ran a tank of gas and wait a minute all of a sudden its smoking like crazy, but only when good and warm. Now the lifters are making some noise not all the time and the noise comes and goes. Also suddenly the exhaust stays wet with oil.
Suspecting a stuck oil ring or two I flush the motor with Barrymans once then run a while and flush again with Gunk and added Lucas oil traeatment. Still smoking. So I pulled the plugs and dosed each one with BG penatrant and let it sit for four hours then fired it up (Big Smoke for a while) and add some RXP to the fuel. Now my 4.56 ring and pinons and lockers have arrived so off to the pros.
Shazam when it comes home no more smoking ah life is good again(the shop only worked on the axels).
I run two tanks of gas with no smoking at all nice dry charcol grey exhaust and then bam its starts smoking again. Now it has marvel mystery in the crank case has been treated wih seafoam and Ive added Kroil directly to each cylinder. Still smoking(worse from the marvel) but runs fine till one of the left bank plugs oil fouls.

Its driving me crazy please any help will be appreciated. I don't want to rebuild it (If I must I prefer to spend on a short block Chevy).

Do the part where you pull the plugs and spray in the lube that will loosen the rings. The thing is to get it to clean enough so that they don't keep resticking. Run a can of BG44K fuel additive in your gas. It is around $20 but is the best for removing carbon and deposits. If that doesn't do it you might have to do a tear down. No rebuild, just a tear down and clean.

Hey Thanks, I'll try it out. One more chemical couldnt hurt as I've already added about everything but chlorox.

Thnx

Just a thought here -- int the etc etc etc oirtion before you fired it up -- what did you do to loosen the rings and relieve the initial lubrication burden? (sounds more like a cracked ring to my unless all that crap is still in your oil (the several quarts of whatevers that you've added already...)

Against my better judgement I really didn't do anything. I had purchased 6 quarts of Marvel and was about to fill each cylinder and let it soak for a week when the mechanic I was having do some of the work met me to look at the Jeep. When I told him what I intended to do he reached down and was able to turn the engine over by hand. At that point he said not to put the Marvel in. So I did'nt. Now I wonder if he just wanted to avoid the mess in his shop when it came time to spin it out. Now I regret not doing it. But you never know.

I think the oil is clean I've changed it six times since May including the two crankcase flushes. I had a different Mechanic look at it Thursday and he advised "just run the crap out of it and it will probably clear it self up with time" So thats what I'm going to try for now.
Thanks for the input.

I'd concurr - it's either gonna rte-seat the rings or not -- you may wanna consider short interval oil changes (like a new engine would do ) and/or adding a dispersant (BG MOA or similar) and good filter to the mix, but other than that - see what happens -- of you can get to a specific set of conditions for the burn - then looking at that issue wold be worth while, but I'd run the snot outta it till whatever either wore back in or broke altogether!
