Who is using the stock air compressor to power their OBA systems? Can someone point me to a write up on this, i have found plenty on using a York but not a stock compressor. Thanks in advance.

It's going to be the same as the York set ups, you just don't have to mess with mopunting the compressor and changing belts.

Don't see how you could feasible use the stock AC compressor for OBA system since it does not have any independent oil reservoir. The stock AC compressor relies upon the ac system to function properly.

Since the York has its own oil reservoir it is perfectly suited for OBA duty.

I knew that self librication was an issue, however i wouldnt be using it for long periods and wouldnt mind oiling it manually with compressor oil. Any comments are appreciated.

When using a sandeen rotary compresser, you want to put an inline tool oiler before it to give some oil, and an oil filter after. This will keep it wet. I think Brad might have some links at www.onboardair.com to some people that have done this.

It works well, if you can find an AC unit. If you are converting your existing AC, then it should be no problem!!!

Rifraf, I think I know the answer to this ahead of time, but when you do something like that, are you then sacrificing the normal A/C functionality of the unit?

Yep, you are likely guessing correctly... that once the a/c compressor has been converted for use as an air compressor, it is no longer able to be used for a/c. It's one or the other, but not both. That's why I added a York a/c compressor for my OBA setup. I didn't want to lose my a/c since I live in a desert climate.

I'm using the stock A/C unit as OBA. It's simple to do as there are no brackets to fabricate, no extra belts, etc. You just bolt it on, buy a new belt, keep the stock one as a spare and off you go.

You do have to use an in-line oiler. I ran a little bit of Slick50 through the compressor first, then filled up the oiler's reservoir with Slick50 and let'er rip. Seems to be working fine after almost a year of use. After every 3rd outing or so I clean the oil separator/filter and check the oiler and add Slick50 if necessary.

I bought the compressor from a buddy who had a machinist cut the threads in the port holes. Then I just plumbed everything together.

Jolleyman, I am using an old rotary A/C with an in line oiler for OBA. Works great. Check it out whenever you want to.

I didn't want to lose my a/c since I live in a desert climate.

Escondido seemed pretty tropical to me when I stayed with you. I guess compared to DV, it was. :)

You were here in March, right Dwayne? It gets downright warm in the Summer.:D Plus I can be in the John Wayne movie type cactus-type desert in 45-60 minutes.:D

I was planning on using a stock ac compressor but couldn't find any. So I went with a new York from Brad Kilby.

Yup. March.

Funny thing about traveling. When I visited you out there in CA, fuel prices were high. When I go to Canada to visit family, fuel prices are high. Now when I get ready to go to Moab next week, fuel prices are once again high. This sucks. :( I paid $1.49 here today. Three weeks ago I paid $1.16.

You only paid $1.49??? I paid $1.89 in San Diego this past Tuesday, so the $1.69 I saw last night in Escondido seemed almost cheap.:eek:

Cutch, it's pretty nice here but I would like to wheel where it's green once in a while too. I long to live in a mountainous area with big tall trees and green grassy meadows... but for wheeling, this SoCalif. location is pretty darned nice.:D

Not totally related to oba, but the gas thing caught my eye!! 1.69 fora us gal. not too bad try paying $3.03 for an equal amount of gas. It's 79.9c a litre here!!
Did my first trail run last night, winched 6 times in the snow and sink holes in the snowmobile trails!!!

I didn't know it was possible to have both A York and regular AC. Was it hard to do? any pics or write-ups?


Can anyone tell me how I tell a YORK when I see one? A buddy has an old scrap Volvo, which I've been told had them, but I don't want to waste time if it's the wrong compressor.

Also, check the Kilby Enterprises website. They have mounting hardware for your York which is specifically made for TJ's that already have A/C, as well as "non-A/C" TJ's.

I sympathize. My parents live in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Rest of the family lives around Toronto.

Every year when I go to visit I have to save and save and save just to buy enough fuel to get around. And then after a week or so of dealing with that, having enough to finally make my escape from Canada and get back to where fuel prices are easier to digest (along with a plethora of other things). :D

Drat. It requires removing the stock air box, but I want a snorkle. Guess its a CO2 Power Tank for me.
