View Full Version : 5spd vs auto
How does the 5spd's tranny's hold up? I prefer a 5sdp over an auto, but am curious as to how it lasts. Also, how weak does the 5spd get if you go to 31" tires? Is it livable? I drive 55 + miles a day, and the 5spd would help a little in millage? Any input would be helpful. Thanks

I don't know about the 5 speeds in the cherokees but using a 5-speed will help some on gas mileage if you can keep your foot out of it (too much)

The five speed is tough enough to take that type of driving. I've got a 5-speed in my TJ, but the '96 XJ that my wife and I had was a 4-speed auto. I think the auto is a better tranny for this type of vehicle.

The XJ's 5-sp will hold up to 31's with no problem, heck, it'll hold up to 33's no problem. I personally prefer the auto though, the mileage difference is pretty small I think, maybe 1-2mpg at the most, and there are mods you can do to get a little extra mpg out of the engine. Personally, I wouldn't let the mileage determine the tranny you get, get the one you'd rather use. Sticks are a ***** in stop and go traffic, and IMHO the only advantage a stick has offroad is the lower 1st gear. ;)

I have grown up utilizing manual trannies. I happen to like them by being able to utilize the engine's power band more effectively. Traffic driving- it sucks! Climbing hills or starting off on a hill can be tricky, but anything can be over rated. Autos are fine, I think the major thing is personal preference.
