OK guys...tell me what you all have done to these little circumferencely challenged engines to get a little more spunk out of them. Im talking about everything but a turbo/SC kit. If you have a cam, does it pass smog tests? Tell me what I need to do!

I have a 97 TJ with a 2.5 I replaced the throttle body with one from a 4.0 just swap your sensors. I put in a air tube from a 4.0 and a K&N cone filter. and I just upgreaded the ignishion system with a accell 300+ kit. So far all have helped.
if you got the jack you kan put in a super charger but thats like 2 grand:D

The first question is what vehicle and year model do you have. That will tell me what type of base engine you have to start with. I have take the 2.5L from stock with carb to throttle body injection with cam and headers. It passes emissions in Colordo with flying colors and the state even gave me a wiaver due to non-original equipment. I love that little engine but because I pull a trailer in the mountains, I am currently building a 4.7L stroker motor and will be installing it around Thanksgiving.

Where are you located in Texas? I am a Texas expatriot.

The 2.5 is actually in a 1996 Dodge Dakota, but I came here beacuse its the exact same engine and I thought yall would know more about the performance options. I am very interested in 1.6 ratio rockers and a cam. I cant seem to find a place selling a cam though. Where did you get yours and what were the specs?(duration lift and such) Im worried about the duration being too large and letting raw fuel out the pipe and therefore spoiling chances to pass the smog test. I live in Arlington, in between Dallas and Ft. Worth.

I am actually running he Mopar Stage III cam. They are obsolete now but you can pick them up on ebay for less than $50 quite often. Do a search on the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/4bangers list and you will find multiple references and the names and addresses of several suppliers.

As far as suppliers for other items, check out Clifford Performance. While a bit pricey, they know their business.

Yeah I was looking at moparperformance.com but they said their cams were for "offroad use only" Ive heard that those cams cant pass emmission testing...I dont know. Do you happen to know the specs on your stage 3 cam? I didnt find any on ebay, but will continue to look. Thanks for the tip and all your input.

Dustin

The biggest thing I've done to make a difference is install a bored out 4.0TB, and damn did it make a difference.

thhjr: I am curious about the cam install & difference in power. I have the same cam sitting in my garage, waiting to be intalled.

mopar70: is there any particular reason you went with that ignition system? I've been kinda lookin around myself.

I went with the 300+ system to make sure I was burning all the gas. That would help the gas mileage as well as performance. I did help both. the 2.5 runs smoother and all so has better throttle responce. As you know we need all the help we can get.:D

Where did you get your TB? IU noticed that you installed a "bored out" 4.0 TB. Did you do this yourself, or did you purchase it like this? Also, did you find it best to get a TB from the same year model engine, or does it matter at all. I believe my 1996 and your 1998 are about the same, but just want to be sure.

Thanks a lot,
Dustin

P.S. Thanks Mopar_man, i was making the mistake of not putting the "L" after 2.5 in the search field

I got the throttle body from www.Jeepersandcreepers.com. I beleive they run about $225, that's includig the core charge. There are a couple other places that carry them, but cost quite a bit more. I believe the 96 & 98's are the same engine, so the sensors shouldn't be a problem.

Hey thanks for the offer, but I dont know if you noticed or not that I mentioned my vehicle is a Dodge Dakota; a 2 wheel drive nonetheless. Im just on this board because we have the same 2.5L 4 cylinder engines. It definitely was a beautiful day though Saturday, I hope you had fun.
