I did a rear brake job on my 85cj. The seals were leaking so I figured do it all and get it over with. I dropped off the axles (hubs wouldn't come off) at a machine shop. They got the hubs off and went to press on the new bearings. The drivers side bearing just "floated" on the axle. Enter new axle. and hub.
Put it all back together and I have rear end noise when cornering. The shim was on the passenger side. The service manual says it should be on the drivers side. I've had this apart and put back together a number of times with different combination of shims, no shims, etc. I can't eliminate the rear end noise. So I'm going to ask a few dumb questions......
Installation order of parts from axle flange out
Brake backing plate
Shims
Seal
dust cover
hub
thrust washer
castle nut
Is this correct?
When the bearing race (or cup) is seated fully, it is recessed about 1/8" from the outside of the axle flange. I assume this is correct? If so what keeps it from moving out thyat 1/8"? The seal?
The brake backing plate..... The area where it fits over the axle is cupped outward. Should this be perfectly flat? Could this be where my end play is coming from?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I love working on my jeep, but my patience is wearing a little thin with this one!
many thanks....
