Please read before posting poll!!
I have been bite by the curiosity bug. I know many of us out here are adicts to our toys. I have built 4 nice rides, and am working on my 5th. I plan on keeping this one, so I am going at it with a different approach. Everyone has always said lift it first. That has always been a pondering question in my mind. I have always done this first, followed up by lockers, wheels/tires, then performance mods. I have taken a different view this time around. I began doing performance mods. It started with a simple K&N filter, followed by a Hyper tech chip. Nice touches, but I needed more. Soon a Flowmaster cat-back was exhausting throatier notes. I then focused on appearance. I had a minor rear-ending accident which expedited a new rear bumper from Custom 4x4. I got a good deal on 5 Z-Racing wheels from Sears. I placed 30x9.5x15s BFG ATs on them. To my dismay, they rubbed the rear bumper & fender wells! I cut my flares, but not the bumper. I soon found myself installing a Tera-Flex 1.5" budget boost. No more rubbing. Well to match the new rear bumper, I got a front bumper with the shackles. I love the look, but somehow it seemed like it was missing something... A haaah! A winch would fill that hole nicely. I ordered one, but was sent the wrong one! In two weeks, I will have that resolved! I then added some dual tubed rocker protection. Yeah, armor is good. Next, I fabed my own roof rack from 1 1/4" DOM tubing. A tad beefy, but it looks stout as hell. Where else do I have to go but up? Raising the XJ, a story unwritten. Give me a month or two and "raising expectations" will be evaluated!

I would have picked armor/protection first if it was there. That way you avoid damage from the get-go.

rocker guards!!!!

i got them after it was too late. :(

Then skids, then lift and tires, then bumpers, then lockers, then winch

and of course you have stuff like gears, sye, rims, etc in interspersed in there

Skids, then do what you want.

For me, it was skids, then winch.

Skids to protect needless to say.

And then I figured, if I am going to wheel, I am going to get stuck. If I get stuck, I want to get unstuck. That made my mind up for me on mod #2. It wouldn't matter if I was stock or lifted, I was going to get stuck (just me, push it until I get stuck)

Of course, there were plenty enough small mods that were made in the meanwhile.
