I haven't done the swap but I found some write-ups and information.

I have a dana 300 in my 97 TJ. I was able to retain my drivers side drop also. This was accomplished with a kit from down-east offroad. It basicly flips the dana 300 upside down so you can still run axles with drivers side diffs. I love it so far, the twin stick is very nice and knowing that I have the dependability of a gear driven dana 300 is a plus also. Another reason that I put the 300 in is that when running a 8" lift and 38" tires, you have to think about driveline angles, the 300 is much shorter than a 231 and is almost 2" shorter than the shortest atlas.

edit: www.downeastoffroad.com is the website for the dana 300 flip kit

RockGolem: thanks for the info! How much did everything cost in the end??

I'd be intrested in cost too. Reason I had the links is I have toyed with the idea of that swap.

Well, the total was a totall of a lot of parts and such ordered at once. I dont quite recall but I payed around $100 for an old dana 300 and it was somewhere around $500 for the flip kit. Then of course you add in your new driveshaft and then subtract the selling cost of your old NP231 ($400). So, in retrospect, it really was not as costly as I initally thought it would be. Good luck.

Edit: Go ahead and call Rob or James at Downeast offroad they have all the info.
The number is 1-252-9440.

I am planning on this swap also. it ends up being cheaper than an Atlas or beefing up the 231

Wow much less $ than I thought. I will have to consider moving this up on the list of to do's!

The Dana 300 transfer-case has to be a very sturdy piece of drivetrain. Add deeper fourwheeldrivelowrange, a Twin-Stick Shifter and a 32 spline outputshaft (not sure about it, but I read it somewhere) and you're set.
